The Mercedes GLS has an impressively punchy and smooth diesel engine, and its smart interior will comfortably accommodate seven occupants, but the build quality and ride comfort disappoint for a luxury SUV of this price. The 450d makes the most sense in AMG Line Premium Plus trim.
The trim
This mid-level trim adds even more luxury, especially for those who prefer to be driven. This includes ventilated and massaging middle row seats, heated third-row seats, sunblinds for the rear door windows, a pair of screens mounted on the back of the front seats and a rear tablet to control all the functions. You also get 23 in wheels and a heated steering wheel.
The engine
This is the only diesel engine available, producing 362bhp and 553lb ft of torque. The 0-62mph time of 6.1sec and 155mph top speed matches the 450 petrol.
