We reveal the most – and least – dependable cars up to five years old, based on the experiences of more than 16,000 owners...

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 2021 front tracking

Most reliable MPVs

1. BMW 2 Series Active/Grand Tourer (2015-present)

Reliability rating 98.8%

What went wrong? Engine 7%

The 2 Series Active Tourer isn’t the most capacious MPV, but it’s proving impressively durable. Seven percent of the cars we were told about developed faults that prevented them being driven, but all were fixed for free and back on the road in less than a week.

Owner’s view "It's been very reliable. As a result, I intend to keep it a year longer than I originally planned"

2. Mercedes B-Class (2019-present)

Mercedes B-Class MPV 2020 front tracking

Reliability rating 98.7%

The B-Class puts in a strong showing when it comes to reliability. Only 6% of cars had a fault, all of these concerning non-engine electrical systems. Owners told us that their cars were all fixed for free, but that they spent more than a week in the service department.

3. Kia Carens (2013-2019)

Our cars: Carens, Qashqai and i10

Reliability rating 98.5%

The Carens, with two small pull-up seats in the boot that enable it to turn into a seven-seater when needed, is a sound used SUV choice on the basis of reliability. Although 13% of the cars we were told about went wrong, the only problem area was the battery, and all faults were fixed for free in a day or less.

Least reliable MPVs

1. Volkswagen Touran (2015-present)

Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI 115 SE DSG

Reliability rating 74.1%

What went wrong? Air-con 13%, gearbox/clutch 13%, non-engine electrics 13%, battery 6%, bodywork 6%, brakes 6%, engine 6%, fuel system 6%

A fault rate of 56% and some costly repair bills drag the Touran’s score down. Only 60% of repairs were carried out for free, leaving 20% of owners facing bills of more than £1500. Although 40% of the problems were resolved in a day or less, another 40% took the workshop more than a week to put right.

Owner’s view "It’s the first car I have had in many years that has broken down. It has happened twice for different reasons"

2. Citroen Grand C4 Picasso (2013-2018)

Citroën Grand C4 Picasso

Reliability rating 95.2%

It may be in the bottom three, but the Grand C4 Picasso's reliability rating is actually quite strong; only 7% developed a fault, and only with the sat-nav. That said, none were fixed for free, with owners paying between £51 and £100 and all taking more than a week to put right.

3. Ford Galaxy diesel (2015-present)

Used Ford Galaxy fcorn

Reliability rating 97.0%

Like the Grand C4 Picasso above, the Galaxy earns a decent reliability rating, despite its position in the bottom three. Owners told us that 25% of their cars went wrong, suffering suspension- related issues, but all were fixed in a day or less, with repairs being carried out free of charge.
