Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best coupé for value

A good coupé isn’t just about style. The trick if it’s to be among the class leaders is that it must feel on point whether you’re enjoying a great road or enduring a terrible commute...

The Audi TT has been a perennial winner in this category at the What Car? Awards, and rightly so. When it comes to a coupé that’s easy and affordable to live with, yet fun to drive and filled with premium lustre, the TT strikes the perfect balance.

Even the entry-level 40 TFSI, which gets a 194bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, has serious gusto when you want it, and the front-wheel drive layout still delivers masses of handling poise as well as reassuring stability. Sure, plenty of buyers will be tempted by the more powerful TT 45 TFSI with its quattro four-wheel drive option, but the cheapest model is a superb all-rounder. And it’d have to be, to beat rivals like the BMW 2 Series and Ford Mustang.

It’s not just about the way it drives, either. The interior is a class act that feels up there with far pricier coupés such as the Porsche 911 in terms of its ambience, with top-notch materials and an immaculate finish. The TT doesn’t feel cheap by any measure, then, but it is a huge amount of car for the money.
