Caterham planning new sports car

Caterham is plotting a more upmarket two-seater sports car to sit above its traditional 'Seven' model line-up.

Speaking to What Car?, new Caterham boss Graham MacDonald confirmed that any new model would be designed with a roof and would be more comfortable and luxurious than the existing models.

The new model would be priced at around 40,000 and more than likely continue the company's policy of using Ford's four-cylinder engines. However, the new car's engine would be supercharged to provide more power. A six-cylinder version is also being considered, but is less likely to reach production.

MacDonald also revealed that any new sports car would have a more global appeal than the companys current offerings. He predicted that the new car would appeal to the growing Asian market, and could possibly be engineered for the lucrative US marketplace. However, this could also mean the new model might be manufactured not in the UK, but in the Far East.
