Caterham to expand its range of cars

Caterham boss Tony Fernandes expects the company to expand beyond sports cars and move into mainstream vehicle production following the announcement of its alliance with Renault.

'This [alliance] is the start of a line of products for Caterham,' said Fernandes. 'We have to evolve into more than just a sports car maker. Crossovers, city cars both come to mind.

'If you look at what Porsche has done, it has set a great template for a company such as ours. If you look at Asia, it is the Cayenne that is selling the most there, so Porsche has gone from a pure DNA sports car maker and evolved from there.'

This new range of products could also evolve upwards, with a supercar very much on the company's agenda.

Caterham Cars boss Graham Macdonald said he would like to see a supercar at the top of the company's range.

'I would love to have a halo project with carbonfibre and KERS [energy recuperation system],' he said.

So far, the company has only got confirmed plans to make one model in the alliance, which will be on sale in around 2015. The first concept car could appear within the next 12 months.
