Deal of the day: Nissan Note

The Nissan Note is a spacious MPV in a small hatchback-sized package, and a rival for the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio. The Note isn't exactly expensive to begin with, but today's deal can save you more than £4000 off the list price of a high-end Tekna model.

The infotainment system in the Note is very good, and comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a range of Nissan apps, which are all controlled via the 5.8in touchscreen.

Up front the Note is very airy and able to accommodate the tallest of adults. The same applies for tall passengers in the back where there is plenty of head and leg room.

The rear seat bench can also be slid back and forth to increase leg room or boot space as required. The Note's boot is spacious too - in fact, it's bigger than that of a Ford Focus - although the wheel arches do protrude into the space.

While undoubtedly smooth, the 1.5-litre diesel engine on offer here isn't refined. Its sound echoes in the cabin when driving around town, although once up to motorway speeds it dies away. Accompanying the engine noise is tyre noise, too.

At times the ride can feel a bit on the harsh side when tackling poor surfaces at low speeds. Once up to cruising speed, though, the ride improves to a reasonable level of comfort. Watch out for entry-level versions of the Note, too, which get smaller 15in alloy wheels that can make the ride feel choppy.

Should I add any options?

Tekna models come well equipped, but a glass roof is one option to consider because it helps to make the cabin feel more airy. It costs £700.

What are its rivals?

The Honda Jazz has long held its own in this segment, but fails to match the Note’s four star rating due to an uninspiring drive. Other supermini staples, such as the Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio, are both well regarded, but can't really match the Note for pure practicality.
