Deal of the Day: Volvo V40
* Hot hatch-rivalling performance * Low carbon emissions * Save more than £3000...
We recently drove the new Volvo V40 and were impressed with its performance and practicality.
The manual gearbox available with the V40's D4 engine is the one to go for and, with a saving of more than £3000, it’s our Deal of the Day.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine in the D4 delivers hot hatch-rivalling performance with sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.
The V40 is seriously quick and handles well, offering plenty of grip through the corners. It's also brisk in the low gears, and very comfortable on the motorway where the sixth gear comes in handy. There's not much rumble from the efficient diesel engine, too.
The cabin has always been a strong point, too: the seats are comfortable and the V40 is well equipped, including the entry-level trim.
At low speeds, the V40 can feel a bit less supple and the road moise is apparent at higher speeds.
The infotainment system looks neat, but it’s difficult to operate.
Rear space is an issue, too; you won’t be able to carry five adults like you can in a Volkswagen Golf GTD. The load bay is also quite narrow and not as deep or square as its rivals' offerings.
Should I add any options?
The D4 is available in four different trims. Standard SE comes with a five-inch colour screen display, DAB radio, Bluetooth, climate and cruise control, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
For an extra £775, R-Design adds an even smarter interior with aluminium trim, sports steering wheel, alloy pedals and a set of TFT digital instruments in the dash.
Lux versions add even more kit but should be avoided because of their steep price.
