New MG2: brand’s smallest electric car set to arrive by 2028

The upcoming MG2 will be a small electric car that will take the fight to the Fiat 500e and Renault 5. Here's what we know...

The phrase “less is more” perpetuates the idea that the simpler something is, the better it will be; and it’s a philosophy that seems to have grabbed hold of the car industry at the moment, because we’re suddenly seeing a whole host of small cars being introduced. MG will be among the brands to take on this segment of the market with the launch of its MG2 small electric car.

The MG2 will be a smaller sibling to the combustion-engined MG3 and all-electric MG4 hatchbacks, and it’ll arrive to take on the growing electric small car segment that includes the Fiat 500e, Hyundai Inster and Renault 5.

No technical details have been revealed yet, but it’s understood that the MG2 will be underpinned by the same tech as featured on the MG4. That model gets three battery options: a 51kWh unit, a 64kWh unit and a 77kWh unit (all total capacities).

It’s unlikely that the MG2 will get all of those battery options, but it might receive the smaller two – which could point to a maximum range of more than 200 miles. For reference, the rival Renault 5 can officially manage up to 252 miles from its 52kWh battery.

Outside, we’d expect the MG2 to borrow plenty of design cues from its larger siblings, the hybrid MG3 and electric MG4. It should get conventional hatchback looks, but it will likely borrow the more sculpted front end of the MG4.

Inside, we expect it’ll get the same treatment as in the MG3 and MG4, with a 7.0in digital instrument screen behind the wheel and a 10.25in infotainment touchscreen. That system is responsive enough, but it’s distracting to use on the move, and it suffers from a lack of proper physical buttons.

Due to launch by 2028, the MG2 will face a host of brand new rivals when it eventually arrives. It’ll be up against the slightly larger Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq and VW ID 2, which are all due to launch in 2026, as well as the cheaper Renault Twingo and VW ID 1.

No prices have been revealed yet, but MG did confirm that the MG2 will be competitively priced against the likes of the Renault 5, which starts at £22,995. On top of that, it’s set to be fully designed at MG’s London studio.
