Reunion tours are all the rage at the moment; JLS is back, Oasis sold out multiple stadium shows in a row, and the Spice Girls could be returning again in hologram form in the near future. The next act due for its comeback tour will be the revived Smart ForTwo, in the form of the all-electric Smart #2 city car.

Indeed, a revival of the Smart Fortwo EQ two-seater is due to arrive next year, and it’ll be badged the Smart #2 in line with the German brand’s current lineup.

Due to be designed in Germany by parent company Mercedes and built in China, the Smart #2 will, rather confusingly, slot in below the #1 electric SUV as the brand’s smallest EV.

No technical details have been revealed yet, but the #2 will be a fully electric car, meaning it won’t be available with combustion power. The previous electric ForTwo EQ had a tiny 17.6kWh battery which could only manage an official 99 miles on a single charge – much less than what any rival nowadays can do. For example, the extremely cheap Dacia Spring has an official range of 140 miles, while the Hyundai Inster can officially manage a maximum of 230 miles.

Now, though, electric car tech will have improved considerably since then, so we could anticipate a range closer to 150 or 200 miles, in line with the #2’s main rivals.

The teaser images released by Smart only reveal the #2’s shadow, but it seems to get a more angular look than its predecessors, with a roof spoiler and more squared-off features. We imagine it’ll also take inspiration from Smart’s other ‘hashtag’ models, such as a lightbar spanning the width of the front end and triangular air intakes.

Inside, it could receive a similar minimalistic layout to other Smart models, with pleasant upmarket materials and most controls housed on a central infotainment touchscreen. Indeed, for us, Smart produces some of the most plush-feeling interiors on the market, so we have high hopes for the #2.

While a lot of similarly-sized rivals for the Smart #2 are keenly priced offerings like the Dacia Spring or Leapmotor T03, Smart models tend to be positioned slightly higher in terms of cost. For that reason, we’d expect the #2 to be priced in line with rivals like the Citroën ë-C3 or Hyundai Inster, between £20,000 and £25,000.
