As car buyers continue to choose SUVs over more traditional small cars, where does that leave the hot hatchback — especially in a world of electric cars? Well, Vauxhall thinks it may have the answer with the new Vauxhall Mokka GSE, a spicy variant of Vauxhall’s keenly-priced Mokka Electric.

Based on the Opel Mokka GSE Rally, the Mokka GSE borrows some of the setup from that car, including its electric motor and battery. According to Vauxhall, its steering system and brakes have also been designed with sport in mind, in collaboration with Vauxhall’s sister brand Opel – which has experience in rallying dating back to the 1980s.

At the heart of the Mokka GSE is the same 54kWh (total capacity) battery that’s found in the Opel Mokka GSE Rally, with a single electric motor driving the front wheels. In total, the Mokka GSE pumps out 276bhp – not quite as punchy as a VW ID 3 GTX or a Cupra Born VZ, but it’s still a hefty increase on the rather pedestrian 154bhp output of the regular model.

That power allows the Mokka GSE to sprint from 0-62mph in 5.9sec, which is marginally slower than the ID 3 GTX and Born VZ.

Given its punchier power, the Mokka GSE naturally offers less range from its 54kWh battery than the regular model, at an official 209 miles when you opt for the more efficient tyres. With the standard tyres, the range falls to 201 miles. Its direct rivals, however, offer official figures of more than 300 miles.

Like the regular Mokka Electric, it can charge at speeds of up to 100kW, allowing a 0-80% charge in 27 minutes.

Drivers can pick from three different driving modes while out and about: ‘Sport’ which uses all the power available in the Mokka GSE for top performance, ‘Normal’ which reaches up to 112mph and ‘Eco’ which should maximise electric range.

Outside, the Mokka GSE looks more understated compared with its rallying counterpart, though it does get some yellow accents on the wheels and brake calipers, as well as yellow and black ‘GSE’ badging on the front and sides. Larger 20in wheels come as standard.

Inside, the front seats are furnished with faux-suede Alcantara, and receive yellow and white GSE stitching. You also get a heated vegan leather steering wheel flattened at the bottom and top, and aluminium sports pedals.

The Mokka GSE gets the same 10.0in driver display and 10.0in infotainment touchscreen as in the regular Mokka, with the latter angled towards the driver, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard. What’s different is that you can find performance data, G-force display, acceleration values and other GSE-specific data on the central touchscreen.

As standard, the Mokka GSE comes with a number of safety features including adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors with a panoramic rear-view camera. There's also a six-speaker audio system, wireless phone charging, electrically folding and heated door mirrors and keyless entry and start.

Prices for the Vauxhall Mokka GSE start at £36,995, allowing it to quality for the level two government Electric Car Grant. With the £1500 discount, it costs from £35,495, undercutting the Cupra Born VZ and VW ID 3 GTX.
