1. Skoda Octavia

Size, practicality, comfort and value: the Skoda Octavia has it all. That's why it's our favourite family car for this budget. Not only do you get the same excellent turbo petrol engines that you do in the Volkswagen Golf, you also get oodles of space for passengers and in the boot. It's smooth and easy to drive, and composed in corners, and while the interior can't quite match up to the Golf on which it's based, it's still classier than most of its rivals.

And the family cars to avoid...

MG 6

It's quite entertaining to drive but, with that exception, the list of the 6's merits is sparse. It's noisy, uncomfortable and feels cheap inside, and it's neither fast nor efficient on the road. Yes, it's cheap, but it's best avoided.

Fiat Bravo

The Bravo seems like extremely good value at first and it looks good, too. Sadly, it's less inspiring to drive, with poor ride quality, so-so handling and vocal, inefficient engines, while inside there's a litany of quality issues, and it feels cramped.
