Top 10 used SUVs for less than £25,000
Some of the most spacious and most desirable SUVs around can now be had for very reasonable prices. Here are 10 of the best...
The reputation of the Land Rover Discovery precedes it, and it’s not hard to see why. True, it isn’t the sharpest SUV to drive by a long chalk, but its combination of genuine off-road ability, badge prestige and comfort make it a force to be reckoned with, and its seven seats and big, boxy boot make it more practical than most SUVs, too. Keep in mind, too, that expensive electrical faults are commonplace, so check all the equipment works, especially on high-spec HSE versions.

6. Volvo XC90
With its emphasis on practicality and comfort, the Volvo XC90 carves its own path through the SUV maze, and it’s proven to be a popular one at that. The XC90 can’t keep up with its sharpest rivals for driving enjoyment, but then again it makes no pretences about being sporting.
As a used buy, it’s also better value than the Land Rover Discovery, making it a seriously tempting proposition. Gearbox troubles can be a problem, especially if it’s been used for towing, so try and find one which hasn’t if you can. Ppetrol models are thirsty, too, so a diesel engine is your best bet unless you do relatively few miles.

5. Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 offers an added slice of practicality with its sliding rear seats. That said, even when they're in their rearmost position, they aren’t the most spacious, and a firm ride means the Q5 isn’t the most comfortable of SUVs. Nevertheless, its classy interior and stable, taut handling make it a popular choice, and its huge boot is an added bonus.
The seven-speed automatic gearbox is known to be troublesome, so make sure it shifts gears smoothly, and avoid 2.0-litre turbo petrol models, which aren't very fuel efficient and are known to suffer from high oil consumption.
