It's very hard to be good at everything, but the Seat Ateca takes a pretty good stab at it.

Towing comes easily to this family SUV. The combination of a punchy 2.0-litre diesel engine, four-wheel drive, and its smooth-shifting DSG automatic gearbox makes for easy progress with a caravan in tow. A 12.1sec 30-60mph time underlines how the 148bhp engine has all the pull you might need to handle any sensibly matched caravan.

The Ateca stops as well as it goes, too, with a firm pedal feel and immediate bite from the brakes. The 9.8-metre stopping distance is right up with the best in the 1550-1699kg weight class.

Still, as welcome as all this is, it's stability that really counts when towing. And, fortunately, at a steady 60mph the Ateca feels fully in control. Even pushing up to 70mph gave us no cause for sweaty palms, and hill starts are straightforward.

The Ateca is enjoyable in everyday driving as well as while towing. There's a sporty feel to the handling that makes it a cut above most rivals if you're a keen driver. The trade off is a relatively firm ride, but it's one worth paying.

Inside, the Ateca has plenty of space for front and rear-seat passengers, although it has a conventional 60/40 split rear bench rather than the sliding and reclining rear seats of some rivals.

Similarly, our practicality judges were impressed with the boot size, but they'd prefer a proper spare wheel rather than a puncture repair kit – a space saver is available as an option.
