Used hybrids: BMW 5 Series vs Volvo S90

On paper, these two luxury hybrid saloons offer great economy and, bought used, tremendous value for money, but which one makes the best buy?...

BMW 5 Series vs Volvo S90

Our verdict

If your heart is set on a hybrid car – and it’s worth pointing out here that unless they fit into your lifestyle completely the equivalent diesel-engined versions of these cars will cost you a lot less to run – then there’s no doubt that buying either of these at this age will save you a pretty sum of money, thanks to that initial heavy depreciation.

But which one to go for? The Volvo S90 has a stylish interior and roomy rear seats and lots of showroom appeal. It’s seriously fast, too, but it lacks the handling skills to back up all that performance. Given that it’s also significantly more expensive to buy at this age, it has to lose out to the BMW 5 Series 530e. The latter is sharper to drive, quieter inside and more comfortable most of the time.
