It feels as though the remit for the interior of my Suzuki SX4 S-Cross was to be 'cheap but cheerful'. Yes, there are quite a few hard plastics around, but there are also some soft faux-leather trim pieces on the arm rests, and everything feels as though it will stand up well to the rigours of family life.

It’s generally a decent place to sit, too. Driving the car to Wales for a video shoot recently didn’t leave me feeling cramped or uncomfortable.

The heated seats that come with SZ5 trim go a long way to making big winter drives in the S-Cross more bearable. The front seats warm up quickly once you’ve made the simple choice of 'high' or 'low' on a chunky-feeling switch next to the gearbox.

Plumping for SZ5 trim brings the cost of the Suzuki S-Cross up to £29,499 if you buy new. At that price, it's a hard sell considering all the other rivals you can have for the same money (or less).

However, if you go lightly used, as I have, the first owner has taken the brunt of the depreciation, meaning you get more bang for your buck.
