The 2021 creation of the Stellantis super-group of car brands was in some ways just a formalisation of what has been going on in the van world for nearly three decades - Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall and Fiat have worked together for years.
The Citroen Relay, Fiat Ducato and Peugeot Boxer have been based on fundamentally identical underpinnings throughout that time - and now Vauxhall is benefitting from the relationship by switching its large Movano van the same way. An immediate upshot is that the Vauxhall Movano, like the Citroen Relay, Fiat Ducato and Peugeot Boxer, is now the best big van for payload in its class.
In chassis cab format, this quartet have a huge weight carrying capability with a maximum 1790kg payload, making them the de facto choice for many bodybuilders looking to add tipper, dropside or Luton bodies, as well as motorhomes. This reputation has also enabled the brands to capitalise on their own factory built line-up of bodied vehicles, adding a huge degree of practicality to the range.
While the Renault Master van runs them close for payload, it is lacking in other areas. Meanwhile, our winning quartet comfortably betters the carrying weight of segment best-seller Ford and its Transit van.
What’s more, they also offer greater flexibility, with a wide range of bodies with four lengths and three roof heights to choose, ensuring a strong 17m3 can be transported in the rear.
