The Volkswagen ID 4 and ID 5 now officially qualify for the level two Government Electric Car Grant, the German brand has announced.

This means that buyers of the ID 4 and ID 5, alongside the previously confirmed VW ID 3, will receive a £1500 discount on the list prices of those models. As a result, prices for both cars will now start at £35,495.

This comes after the Government announced its Electric Car Grant (ECG) back in July, introducing discounts across a number of all-electric vehicles to incentivise EV uptake and reach targets set out in the ZEV mandate.

In order to qualify, cars must be priced under £37,000 and adhere to certain environmental standards in terms of how much CO2 is emitted during production. The manufacturer must be signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative, which supports businesses reducing their carbon emissions with set goals.

Eligible vehicles can qualify for one of two discounts: a level one £3750 discount, or a level two £1500 discount. So far, only two models have been confirmed to be eligible for the full £3750 discount: the Ford Puma Gen-E and Ford E-Tourneo Courier.

The ID 4 and the ID 5 join their ID 3 stablemate, as well as a number of other vehicles from brands including Citroën, Peugeot, Nissan and Vauxhall, among the models eligible for the smaller £1500 discount.

With its new starting price, the ID 4 undercuts the entry-level Skoda Enyaq (which also qualifies for the ECG) and offers a significant discount over the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. In order to get the discount, though, you have to specify your ID 4 in either Pure Essential, Pure Match or Pro Essential trim.

Similarly, the ID 5 now offers a significant discount over the EV6 and Tesla Model Y, even with its larger 77kWh battery. To qualify for the discount, buyers must opt for Pure Match or Pro Essential trim.
