The Porsche 718 Boxster is a phenomenally good sports car, and makes for a great used buy, too.

Used Porsche 718 Boxster 2016-2025 review
Star rating

What should I look for in a used Porsche Boxster sports?

This is a very sporty car and will therefore have been used enthusiastically from time to time. Check the bodywork carefully for any signs of damage. Look at the alloy wheels closely for kerb damage, as repairs will be costly. Also check the operation and condition of the folding hood.

Our latest What Car? Reliability Survey shines an overtly negative light on the model, though. The 718 Boxster (and its 718 Cayman sibling) ranked last out of 15 cars in the coupés, convertibles and sports car category, not to mention it did so with a concerning reliability rating of just 77.9%.

As a brand, Porsche ranked 19th out of 32 manufacturers – that isn't particularly great either.

What are the most common problems with a used Porsche Boxster sports?

Engines and gearboxes are generally reliable, although earlier cars had problems with the dual-clutch transmission, and owners complained about the quality of the paintwork.

Is a used Porsche Boxster sports reliable?

A mixed bag. In our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey the 718 Boxster (and its 718 Cayman sibling) ranked last out of 15 cars in the coupés, convertibles, and sports cars category, and it did so with a concerning reliability rating of just 77.9%.

However, in the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey the Boxster finished joint top of the coupé, convertible and sports car class, alongside its hard-topped sister, the Porsche Cayman. Only 6% of cars suffered faults, and these were all fixed for free in a day or less.

In our 2025 survey, it seemed to revert back to a poor showing when it came in 10th out of 12 cars with a score of 89.8%.

Every Boxster comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty but, like most cars of this type, it will chew through consumables, such as tyres and brakes, at a rate of knots

As a brand, Porsche ranked 19th out of 30 manufacturers – that isn't particularly great either.
