The Vauxhall Astra blends value with good ride comfort, tidy handling and adequate performance, but struggles to trouble the best family cars in other areas. If you do buy one, we recommend going for the 1.2-litre 130 petrol engine and mid-spec GS trim.

This mid-spec trim is also our chosen trim of the range. It won’t set you back much more than the entry-level trim, but adds some luxuries to the standard equipment list that’ll make your ownership nicer, including adaptive cruise control, more comfortable seats, keyless entry and start, a 360-degree parking camera, and a heated steering wheel and front seats.

This is the most powerful petrol engine, producing 128bhp and with a 0-60mph time of 9.7sec. Top speed is 130mph. As well as a six-speed manual, there's also an eight-speed automatic option with the same performance figures.
