What should I look for in a used Vauxhall Insignia hatchback?

The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is a rather large car and thick roof pillars obstruct the view over your shoulder. This can hinder parking, especially in tight spaces. Parking sensors were an option, so look out for any scuffs to bumpers if the car you're looking at isn’t equipped with them.

Some of the larger alloy wheels fitted to models with bigger engines can be susceptible to kerb damage. Again, check for any blemishes – especially to the optional 20in diamond-cut wheels – because they can start to corrode if road salt reacts with the exposed metal.

What are the most common problems with a used Vauxhall Insignia hatchback?

The Insignia Grand Sport is rather new and hasn’t thrown up any major concerns yet. However, Vauxhall doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability, scoring a respectable 11th place out of 31 manufacturers surveyed in our latest reliability study.

If your Insignia Grand Sport has a diesel engine, then it is fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). This means that the car will need to be taken on frequent motorway journeys to ensure the DPF can regenerate, because this process is only triggered at high speed. Check how the previous owner has used the car if you are unsure.

Another potential problem with DPF-equipped cars is if the filter has been shut off partway through a regeneration. The result is contamination of the oil system with fuel, leading to the oil level rising gradually over time. This can cause damage to the engine, if it hasn’t already, so it’s worth getting the car checked out.
