Accessibility & Motability

Usability for people with disability or their carers

The Volkswagen Sharan is a good example of why traditional MPVs still suit a lot of buyers. The driver's door opens wide to 68 degrees, so it won't get in the way as you climb inside. While there’s a 452mm step up and over the sill to get in, the driver's seat is a good 686mm from the ground on its lowest setting. Adjust it all the way up and you sit 728mm from the road. It's good to know that the front passenger seat is height adjustable too.

The step up from the floor of the car to the door sill inside is 135mm. That's not especially high, but some MPVs – often those based on commercial vehicles – have very low sills. For example, the Vauxhall Vivaro Life has a 5mm sill and the Volkswagen Transporter Shuttle has no sill at all.
