The Volvo XC60 looks and feels classy inside, plus it's also roomy and well equipped. In short, it's a fine choice. The Audi Q5 is a better all-rounder, though, while the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan are more fun to drive.

Mid-range Plus is worth considering if you want a few more luxuries; it gives the XC60 a more upmarket interior, fully electric seats, four-zone climate control, keyless drive, a premium stereo, a heated windscreen, heated rear seats and a whole host of extra safety features.

The XC60's only diesel option is the B4, which has 194bhp and comes with four-wheel drive. It's won’t throw you back in your seat with its acceleration (0-62mph takes 8.3sec), but it has more than enough mid-rev oomph for easygoing pace.
