The Volvo XC60 looks and feels classy inside, plus it's also roomy and well equipped. In short, it's a fine choice. The Audi Q5 is a better all-rounder, though, while the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan are more fun to drive.

Mid-range Plus is worth considering if you want a few more luxuries; it gives the XC60 a more upmarket interior, fully electric seats, four-zone climate control, keyless drive, a premium stereo, a heated windscreen, heated rear seats and a whole host of extra safety features.

With 247bhp, the B5 can sprint to 62mph in 6.9sec, so it's plenty brisk enough. It comes exclusively with four-wheel drive, which is handy if you live up a slippery lane.
