For
If you need a small SUV for a fair amount of off-road work, then the Freelander is as good as it gets. This SD4 model comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, not to mention a long list of standard equipment.

It’s a relaxed cruiser, and the soft suspension means it’s one of the most comfortable cars in this class. The driving position is terrific and low speed refinement is good.

Against
The Freelander doesn’t feel particularly fast or agile compared with its best rivals. There’s also significant body roll through corners.

Its list price means it sits between the Mazda CX-5 and the pricier BMW X3, but both of these rivals are better to drive, more practical and more refined. A replacement for the Freelander arrives in early 2015, so just be aware that you’re buying a run-out model.

Should I add any options?
Mid-range SE Tech trim includes heated leather seats, climate control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, touch-screen sat-nav, automatic headlights and wipers, plus 19-inch wheels.

The optional electric sunroof brightens up the cabin substantially and costs £915. A heated steering wheel costs £175. If you need the car to haul a trailer or caravan, several towbars are available from £210.
