Premium Land Rover Defender planned

29 November 2012

  • Next Defender will be 'premium' says LR boss
  • Capable, refined and durable
  • Design moved on from DC100 concept cars

Land Rover DC100

The replacement for the Land Rover Defender will be positioned as a 'premium' product, company boss John Edwards revealed to What Car?.

The all-new car will be launched some time around 2015, but it won't be a basic, stripped-out car, Edwards said. 'We are never going to compete with mass-market manufacturers. It will be good value, but it will be more capable, more refined and more durable.'

The look of the new Defender was previewed with the DC100 concept cars, but Edwards also admitted that the design, although not yet finalised, has moved on considerably.

He also reiterated a desire to put a Land Rover pick-up on the market. Such a car would be based on the new Defender, but come along later, and be a 'premium pick-up' with more comfort and capability than existing products such as the Mitsubishi L200 and VW Amarok.
