What should I look for in a used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe hatchback?
When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.
There's nothing out of the ordinary to look out for with the 4 Series Gran Coupé yet. Just do the usual checks, such as taking it for a test drive and looking out for any strange noises or feelings (that suggests a mechanical fault), checking the exterior for dings and scrapes and the interior for signs of excessive wear and tear. Have a play with the infotainment system and various items of switchgear to make sure they're in working order, too.
BMW gives the Gran Coupé plenty of standard safety equipment, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane-departure assist. The optional-from-new Driving Assistant Professional pack (which comes as part of the Technology Plus Pack) adds adaptive cruise control, a more advanced lane-keeping assistant, a front cross-traffic alert system and an automatic speed limit assist.

Is a used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe hatchback reliable?
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is a reliable car. Although it was absent from our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, the mechanically similar BMW 3 Series (in petrol/plug-in hybrid form) did take part.
In our latest 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey, the 3 Series petrol finished in second place in the executive car class out of 18 cars with an excellent overall score of 97.5%. The diesel finished in fifth place with a good score of 96%.

Petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the latest BMW 3 Series are more dependable than diesels: owners told us 13% went wrong, with the most common fault areas being electrics, the engine and infotainment. BMW paid for 96% of repairs and fixed two-thirds of cars in less than a week.
On the whole, the 3 Series scored higher than its rivals the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-Class, with the exception of the diesel-engined cars. Check out the full list of executive cars here.

Used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé: owners' reliability data
Owners appreciate the car's robust mechanical performance, but some have raised concerns about electrical issues, particularly with the car’s sensors and dashboard displays. These problems often require dealer intervention.
