The Ford Kuga offers tidy handling, a spacious interior and plenty of standard kit, but iffy interior quality and a relatively small boot keep it from beating the best family SUVs. The full-hybrid version – our recommended model – provides smooth performance and competitive running costs.

ST-Line X is the range-topping trim, and includes the same styling and suspension changes as the regular ST-Line version, but adds 19in alloys, a panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. It is an expensive choice, though.

A four-wheel-drive version of the FHEV hybrid is available. It produces a bit more power than the front-wheel-drive version (180bhp as opposed to 178bhp), so performance is a bit quicker (0-62mph takes 8.3sec rather than 9.1sec).
