Sadly, the latest Ford Puma ST is a pale imitation of its former self. It’s slower than before, not as fun in the bends and features a cheaper-feeling interior – yet comes with a higher price tag than the car it replaces. It remains a practical and usable small SUV, but so does the standard Puma. If outright fun is what you’re after, the Cupra Formentor and VW T-Roc R are more compelling.
The engine
With 124bhp, the Ecoboost mHEV 125 can accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.5sec – far quicker than the Nissan Juke or the Volkswagen T-Roc 1.0 TSI. It comes with a super-slick, six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or you have a smooth seven-speed automatic gearbox for a premium. Regardless of the gearbox, this engine pulls reasonably well from low revs, although the more powerful 1.0 Ecoboost mHEV 155 version is much faster.
