With its nippy acceleration and agile handling, the Ford Puma will put a bigger smile on your face than any other small SUV. It’s a car you can buy with your sensible hat on, too, thanks to its excellent real-world fuel economy, cleverly designed boot and attractive PCP costs. The Puma misses out on a fifth star in this highly competitive class because a few rivals are slightly more well rounded. Our favourite version is the Ecoboost 125 in ST Line trim.
The trim
As well as everything you get on regular ST-Line trim, ST-Line X brings climate control, bigger 18in alloys for an even sportier look, tinted windows, part-leather seats and a great-sounding B&O stereo.
The engine
Our favourite engine. With 153bhp, it can hit 62mph from a standstill in just 8.7 seconds, making it as nippy as much pricier small SUVs, such as the Audi Q2 35 TFSI. Fuel economy is barely any worse than than entry-level 1.0 Ecoboost mHEV 125 – in our True MPG test it averaged 45.1mpg. However, it is a shame that you can no longer get this engine with a manual gearbox.
