There’s plenty of room in the front of the XJ for a couple of large adults. The car has a wide interior, so there’s no danger of banging elbows or rubbing shoulders. There’s also a centre armrest that has plenty of room for oddment storage.
Door pockets are a decent size, but not so large that they can take a big bottle of water. At least the glovebox is a decent size and the cupholders can accept a variety of cup sizes.
The XJ can be specified with either a three-seat bench or a pair of much more luxurious seats that are optional on higher-spec models. These have electric adjustment plus heating, cooling and massage functions.
As well as individual seats, you can also specify two folding ‘business’ tables that are sturdy enough for a laptop, as well as a pair of 10.2in screens. These fold out from the rear seats to allow you to watch films or control your music. The tables do come at the expense of seatback map pockets, though.
Both the individual seats and the rear bench are comfortable over longer distances. It’s just a pity that you can’t recline the optional individual seats a little farther, should you need a power nap.
Whichever model you go for, head room is a bit tight due to the roofline falling significantly towards the rear of the car. There is, however, plenty of leg room, especially in long-wheelbase models. You can’t get much in the rear door pockets – certainly not 1.0-litre bottles of drink.
Seat folding and flexibility
Like the driver’s seat, the front passenger seat is also electrically adjustable in 14 way, even on the two lowest trim levels. Moving up to the higher-spec models gets you 18-way adjustable seats.
It may be a saloon but the XJ’s rear bench seats can fold, increasing the car’s load capacity. This function isn’t available on versions with individual rear seats.
It’s possible to specify an optional ski flap to enable you to load long objects without having to fold the rear seats. Electric rear seats that can recline for more comfortable travel are also available.
At 479 litres the XJ’s boot is smaller than most rivals’. It is a little on the shallow side, too, but at least it has a wide opening that makes loading bulky items simple enough.
As you might expect with a saloon, the load lip is a bit high, but this is unlikely to be an issue, given the typical loads an XJ will carry.
