The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a raised-up, off-road oriented version of the Volvo V90 Estate.
When sales begin early next year, the V90 Cross Country will compete in the same niche market as the VW Passat Alltrack, Audi A6 Allroad and the upcoming all-terrain version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
As you'd expect, the V90 Cross Country looks almost identical to the regular V90 inside and out, but includes body cladding around its lower edges designed to protect the car against rough surfaces. The car's ride height is also raised by 65mm, allowing the V90 Cross Country to tackle tougher terrain.
The regular V90 Estate has been well received in our road tests, matching up well next to estate versions of the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. It's the sister car to the Volvo S90 saloon, which competes with the aforementioned premium German rivals as well as the Jaguar XF.
UK buyers will be able to choose between two diesel engines in the V90 Cross Country, although only one offers all-wheel drive, and that's the D5 2.0-litre diesel.
Inside, drivers will be able to choose from four different driving modes, including a 'rough road' mode as well as 'comfort, eco and dynamic' options. Hill Descent Control - which uses engine braking to slow the car down on steep hills - will also be offered. All V90 Cross Country models will get a bespoke Volvo tyre which is said to offer better off-road grip.
High-riding estate cars like the Volvo V90 Cross Country are designed to appeal to customers who want the added reassurance of being able to travel off-road, but who don't want to step up to an SUV model.
Prices for the V90 Cross Country won't be announced until closer to the car's launch, but it's expected to command a significant premium over the standard car, which costs from £34,555.
