Look solely on this new 1.5 BlueHDi engine and you might be tempted. It is relatively refined, a solid performer and seems to return good economy – although we’re yet to test that officially in our real-world True MPG test. Producing just 96g/km of CO2 makes company car tax competitive as well. It’s definitely the pick of the range.

However, the rest of the 308 package still lags behind the class best. Those looking for a family car with sophistication as well as practicality would be better served by the Golf, or if value and space push all the right buttons, the Octavia is still way out front.
