Even with its competitive price taken into account, we can't recommend this Touareg over the X5 or XC90, because the former is better to drive and the latter more practical.

But what if you've got your heart seat on a Touareg; does this version make sense? Well, the petrol V6 is certainly smooth and powerful, but it’s worth bearing in mind that we struggled to get more than 27mpg out of it in our test, even driving gently. So, while it's a more pleasant companion than the diesel, it's ultimately not the version to choose if you're looking to save money.
