If you have a charging point at your house or workplace, running a plug-in hybrid executive car makes a great deal of sense. No, they’re not cheap to buy, but there’s the potential to save a lot of money on fuel. And if cities in the future restrict all but electric vehicles from their centres, you’ll still have a way to drive in and out.

As for which hybrid executive car you should go for, that depends on your priorities – they all provide a slightly different experience. The Mercedes is the comfiest, while the BMW is the best at driving on electric power. And the Volvo? Well, that has explosive straight-line pace going for it.

Ultimately, though, we reckon the BMW 330e is the best all-rounder of the three – it’s still fast, manages to be just comfy enough, and has the most usable electric range.
