Verdict

The luxury car market has changed significantly since the current Audi A8 first went on sale, not least with the arrival of the fully electric Mercedes EQS and the latest Mercedes S-Class, which can officially travel up to 64 miles on electricity alone in S580e plug-in hybrid form.

The UK company car tax system rewards a long electric range, so choosing those Mercedes models over the A8 will be a financial no-brainer for certain people, even with the 60 TFSIe’s extended zero emissions capability.

However, the A8 promises to be better value than most direct rivals when it comes to leasing costs. And while the updates to the car for 2022 are fairly minor, it continues to set the standard in key areas including refinement and build quality.

As for the S8 (above), it doesn’t offer the cornering thrills of something like a BMW M5 but it is hugely appealing in its own right because it’s crushingly fast yet comfortable and quiet.
