Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best small SUV for comfort

A small SUV's compact size mustn’t come at the expense of practicality and should be reflected by low running costs. It should ride comfortably, too, while maintaining a sense of fun...

Comfort isn’t just about a cushy ride. It’s about refinement, interior space, seating position, an intuitive dashboard layout and more. It’s a whole host of things that, when done well, combine to make you feel instantly at home.

The Volkswagen T-Roc does exactly that, yet it can be hard to pinpoint exactly where it fits in the kaleidoscope of small SUVs on the market. That’s because it strikes something of a happy medium between smaller rivals such as the Ford Puma and Nissan Juke and more premium cars that include the Audi Q2, Lexus UX and Mini Countryman.

New Hyundai Kona & Volkswagen T-Roc vs Seat Arona

It says a lot about the T-Roc, then, that it has seen off all of these rivals, and you don’t even need to head far up the range to get the best version. Our favourite 1.0 TSI 110 model, with its quiet, punchy 1.0-litre petrol engine, is one of the cheapest; team it with Design trim for a supremely forgiving ride as well as great refinement and equipment levels. There are better-handling small SUVs, but when it comes to comfort, the T-Roc is a real delight.
