Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best hot hatch for everyday usability

Best hot hatch for everyday usability

Volkswagen Golf R

Car of the Year 2023 main logo

While we love a hot hatch that feels like a mini racing car, that can get pretty tiresome when you’re stuck in a rush hour traffic jam, in the rain, and just want to be home. That’s where the Volkswagen Golf R comes in. You see, while it’s happy to dispatch 0-62mph in just 4.7sec or go around corners with near-endless grip, it manages to retain all of the usability that the regular Volkswagen Golf has long been praised for.

That’s especially true with the optional adaptive suspension (DCC) fitted and flicked into Comfort mode, when the Golf R becomes a supple, quiet cruiser that’s more forgiving over rough roads than the firmer Hyundai i20 N. There’s also enough space inside for five people and their kit.

True, the i20 N and new Honda Civic Type R are more exciting, but the Golf R will serve you best when it comes to day-to-day use.
