The impressive 4x4 is set to replace the Land Rover Freelander, and while discounts on the Discovery Sport are very difficult to come by, the Freelander has some tempting deals available.

The Freelander is a great off-roader thanks to its smooth ride and great driving position. This diesel engine offers a strong low-end pull and it’s brilliant at ironing out bumps on the road.

Inside, the view from the front and out the back is excellent and the simple dashboard is easy to navigate. Front-seat occupants have plenty of head- and legroom, and the rear seats fold almost flat in a 60/40 split.

Above 50mph, the Freelander isn't as refined as it could be, suffering from a fair amount of wind noise.

Knee-room for passengers in the rear is pretty limited, and the boot has to contend with the wheelarches intruding, which reduces the space available.

Should I add any options?

All versions come with Land Rover’s Terrain Response System that lets you optimise the car’s set-up for different surface conditions.

SE trim is entry-level but still comes with alloys, climate control, rear parking sensors, heated leather seats, DAB radio, and a heated windscreen.

This version is in manual guise, but a six-speed automatic gearbox is an option.

What next?
