How to spec a Volkswagen T-Cross

If you're in the market for a small SUV, the Volkswagen T-Cross should be at the very top of your shopping list.

Despite sitting in one of the most crowded markets around, and fighting against brilliant rivals including the Seat Arona and Kia Stonic, the T-Cross stands out thanks to its spacious and flexible interior, impressive array of safety equipment and its smooth ride. In fact, it earns a full five-star rating on our road test.

Our full 16-point review tells you what the T-Cross is like to drive and to live with, but here we're focussing on which options you should choose when ordering one. Our recommended SE trim level gets you most of the kit you're going to want, including adaptive cruise control and automatic wipers, but it's easy to add thousands to the cost of your car with just a passing glance at Volkswagen's extensive list of options. Here's our pick of what to choose, then, to add luxury while also keeping costs sensible.

Volkswagen T-Cross cornering

1. Metallic paint (£575)

'Urano Grey' or 'Pure White' paint is what your T-Cross will come with if you don't choose any of the premium paint options. Metallic paint is our pick, since it adds visual distinction and also value, and you'll have five colours to choose from. You can pay more for two additional 'signature' colours, but we wouldn't bother.

2. Design Pack (£530)

Volkswagen places a big emphasis on personalisation with the T-Cross, and choosing one of the available design packs brings a host of upgrades including bespoke 17in alloy wheels, tinted rear glass, and coloured upholstery and trim that helps to brighten up the car's interior. Choose a green, orange or black-themed pack for £525.

3.Winter Pack (£305)

Nobody likes getting into a cold car on a frosty morning, so adding Volkswagen's Winter Pack is a wise move. It brings heated front seats, heated windscreen washer jets and a warning light to tell you when your washer fluid is running low – all of which will help make snowy or icy journeys easier.

Volkswagen T-Roc R reversing camera

4. Reversing camera (£265)

Parking sensors don't become standard-fit in the T-Cross until you get up to SEL trim, but you can add a reversing camera to take much of the stress away. The camera's feed is displayed on the car's infotainment touchscreen, so you can concentrate on moving without having to turn your head.

5. Front and rear mats (£95)

Given the family-friendly nature of the T-Cross, it's likely that grit, grime and mud of all sorts will eventually find its way inside. To help keep your car's interior looking factory fresh for as long as possible, then, these mats are a wise investment – and a cheap upgrade, too.

Volkswagen T-Cross key

1. Keyless entry (£345)

While the idea of getting into your car and starting the engine without ever getting the key out of your pocket sounds great in theory, it also represents a potential security risk given the recent rise in 'keyless' car thefts. We'd save our money and stick with the standard key instead; you can still press a button to unlock the car's doors.
