Scenic E-Tech electric: the family EV that changed the conversation

The Renault Scenic is the electric family car with a trophy cabinet. It’s won European Car of the Year 2024, which tells you everything you need to know about how well it blends space, tech and efficiency.

On the outside, the Scenic’s taut, sculpted bodywork and coupé-like roofline create a bold, athletic silhouette. Dazzling C-shaped LED lights and sharp bonnet creases add a sprinkling of modern visual drama – the sort that makes you glance back over your shoulder after parking.

Top-spec Iconic esprit Alpine trim adds extra sporty details and the option of matte shadow grey paint with a contrasting diamond black roof and mirrors. Techno and Techno esprit Alpine versions offer five colours to choose from and 19in diamond-cut alloys as standard. The point is, however you spec it, the Scenic is sure to turn heads.

Inside, style meets cutting-edge tech. Two high-definition screens span a whopping 774cm² on the dashboard, with the vertical touchscreen acting as your portal to Renault’s advanced openR Link infotainment system with Google built-in – offering real-time navigation, intelligent voice control, smartphone mirroring and more than 100 in-car apps, including Spotify, Waze and Amazon Music.

The cabin is also adorned with plenty of classy touches, like soothing ambient lighting, while the vast solarbay® panoramic sunroof[2] allows you to select four levels of opacity depending on your mood.

Under the body, Renault’s ultra-slim batteries free up space for a flat floor and a roomy cabin, with 38 litres of clever storage and a 545-litre boot (expanding to 1670 litres with the seats folded). An ingenious rear armrest adds two USB-C ports and mounts for devices, keeping passengers entertained en route. It’s thoughtfully made, too: no leather, 100% recycled seat fabrics[3], and 89% of the entire car recyclable[4].

On the road, the Scenic’s 87kWh battery delivers up to 381 miles of range (WLTP)[5], making both long commutes and weekend trips effortless. And when you do need to charge, rapid 11kW AC charging makes light work of home and workplace top-ups.

Performance is punchy too, the Scenic’s 220bhp motor delivering a 0-62mph dash of just 7.9 seconds. Pair that with clever suspension and communicative steering, and the Scenic is as fun and responsive on your favourite B-road as it is on the morning motorway precession.

Renault’s Human First in-car safety technology offers up to 30 advanced driver-assistance systems[6] to enhance safety and driving ease. Depending on the trim, you’ll get everything from adaptive cruise to lane keeping and emergency braking. And when you come to the end of your journey, all-round parking sensors, a 360 degree camera and even hands-free parking means you won’t be leaving any paint behind.

Company car users will like the numbers, too: a 3% Benefit-in-Kind rate for 2025/26, £10 first-year VED, and £195 thereafter (plus the luxury-car supplement above £40k). Add HMRC’s advisory electric rates – 8p/mile home, 14p/mile public from September 2025[7] – and running costs stay refreshingly predictable. And to help keep costs in check, the MyRenault app allows you to monitor charging and keep up to date with scheduled maintenance, all from the comfort of your home or office[8].

Renault 5 E-Tech electric: the small EV with superstar status

If any car can make an accountant smile, it’s the new Renault 5. It’s the What Car? Car of the Year 2025 and European Car of the Year 2025, which is some double winning.

In terms of looks, the R5 speaks for itself: classic 1970s Renault 5 attitude reinvented for the digital age, all underpinned by 21st century EV brains. Styling highlights include the square LED daytime running lights, bulging wheel arches, sloping rear window, vertical rear lights and the bonnet-mounted LED charge indicator.

Go for the 52kWh battery and a 150bhp motor and you’ll see up to 252 miles (WLTP)[9] of range on one charge, with 100kW DC rapid charging. The 40kWh versions focus on city-friendly value, while all models ride on Renault’s new AmpR Small platform – compact outside, roomy inside – with Google built-in and a tidy, cheerful cabin. Pricing kicks off in the low-twenties, and with colours like Pop Green and Pop Yellow on the menu, hunting around the staff car park will be a thing of the past.

On the road the R5 is exactly what you want a small French hatchback to be: light on its toes, eager and easy to place, with steering that makes B-roads fun rather than a chore. The electric motor’s on-demand acceleration is quick enough to shrink gaps and slip-roads, and yet refinement at a cruise feels grown-up. This is where Renault’s battery packaging pays off; the floor stays low, the driving position is spot-on, and the car never feels top-heavy.

The Renault 5 is offered in Evolution, Techno, Iconic Five and Roland-Garros trims. Evolution is the entry-level spec, but even this version gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.1-inch screen with OpenR Link multimedia, and essentials like LED lighting and automatic wipers and headlights.

Techno adds cool features like denim and double-stitched upholstery, the aforementioned ‘5’ bonnet charging indicator, a 10.3-inch driver’s display and Google built-in with battery preconditioning and route planning.

Iconic Five gets heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control for stress-free motorway trips, blind-spot warnings and even hands-free parking. For an even more unique feel, there’s the Roland-Garros trim. Fitted with ‘electro-black’ diamond cut alloy wheels, a blend of grey upholstery and leather-style trim, a satin chrome dashboard and even a gear selector inspired by tennis racket handles.

Company-car logic? Couldn’t be simpler. It’s a 3% BiK EV for 2025/26, so benefit charges are tiny versus petrol or diesel superminis sitting well north of 20%. VED follows the post-April 2025 rules for EVs – £10 in year one, then the £195 standard rate – and if you’re reimbursed at HMRC’s advisory electric rates, typical pence-per-mile looks compelling even if you mix home charging with public rapid stops[10]. Awards matter in residuals too, and the 5’s trophy haul won’t hurt.

Renault 4 E-Tech electric: adventurous spirit; enhanced practicality

Prefer something chunkier without going full SUV? The new Renault 4 taps the spirit of the original with its raised ride height, chunky cladding and a cheerful profile, but underneath it shares the 5’s clever hardware.

There’s a 52kWh battery, a 150bhp motor and up to 247 miles (WLTP) of range[11], with 100kW DC fast charging as standard. Prices in the UK start from £25,495 OTR, with the electric car grant included, aligned to three trims – Evolution, Techno and Iconic – with the option of a brilliant plein sud®[12] electric canvas roof on higher grades. It’s practical too, with a family-friendly boot and rear legroom that punches way above its footprint.

Performance is usefully spry – 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds – but the Renault 4’s party trick is how relaxed it feels when loaded with kit and kids. Its suspension takes the edge off scruffy tarmac, body control is tidy and visibility is superb. Add Google built-in on the big portrait touch screen and you’ve a car that’s as easy to live with as it is to like, whether your week swings between school runs and meetings, site visits or muddy trailheads. Like the R5, trims are simple, with Evolution, Techno and Iconic to pick between and lots of kit included from the off. The 7.0-inch driver’s display and OpenR Link 10-inch screen serve up wireless smartphone connectivity for fuss-free Apple CarPlay/Android Auto with no dangling wires. You also get a rear-view camera, cruise control and air-conditioning to make every trip a breeze.

Techno brings dual 10-inch screens with Google functionality, Reno your Renault avatar and even ChatGPT to answer questions like “What’s the origin story of the baguette?”. There are parking sensors dotted around the car, tinted rear windows to keep little ones cool and valuables out of sight, and handy features like a wireless smartphone charger. Even the exterior gets an upgrade, with a diamond black roof, shark fin antenna and fixed aluminium roof bars.

Upgrade to the Iconic range-topper and it looks and feels even more swish, decked out with 18-inch alloy wheels, two-tone paint and grey houndstooth and quilted leather-look upholstery. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel will go down a treat on frosty mornings, as will the handsfree tailgate, while safety is boosted by blind spot, rear traffic and occupant exit alerts.  

For fleets, it mirrors the 5’s numbers: 3% BiK for 2025/26, £10 first-year VED then £195 a year, and seriously low running costs if you’re charging smartly at home and topping up on the road[13]. For drivers who want a dash more attitude and ride height without abandoning small-car costs, this is the sweet spot.

Renault Symbioz front three quarters

Symbioz self-charging full hybrid E-Tech: the effortlessly versatile SUV

Not quite ready to plug in, or rack up motorway miles where a self-charging full hybrid still makes the most sense? The Symbioz is Renault’s new family crossover with two efficient petrol-electrified options.

The star for company drivers is the full hybrid E-Tech making 158bhp, with an official economy figure of up to 65.7mpg and just 97g/km of CO2. That’s enough for a claimed 630 miles on a tank[14] and the sort of pump-to-pump consistency high-milers love. If your budget’s tighter, there’s also a mild-hybrid 138bhp option rated at up to 47.9mpg and 133g/km. 

The full hybrid E-Tech blends a petrol engine, two electric motors and a clever multi-mode transmission. It glides away silently in EV mode, pottering through traffic on battery power alone, then layers in petrol torque seamlessly as speeds rise. Impressively for a hybrid, it can also tow up to 1000kg – enough for a small trailer or light caravan.

The Renault Symbioz has been designed squarely with families in mind, blending crossover style with MPV-like flexibility. Its sliding rear bench is a masterstroke, allowing you to prioritise either legroom for passengers or luggage space depending on the day. With the seats pushed forward, the boot swells to a generous 624 litres – plenty for prams, sports kit or a week’s shopping – while wide-opening doors and a low loading lip make access easy. Inside, the airy cabin offers thoughtful storage for everyday clutter, durable yet welcoming materials, and a bright, modern feel that keeps everyone comfortable on long journeys.

The Symbioz is offered in Techno, Techno esprit Alpine, and Iconic esprit Alpine trims. The base Techno is already well stocked: it includes a 10.25-inch driver’s display, 10.4-inch infotainment (OpenR Link) with Google built-in, adaptive cruise, 18-inch alloys, and a strong safety and comfort suite.

Moving up to Techno esprit Alpine, you gain styling upgrades from the Alpine sub-brand — sportier trim, 19-inch alloy wheels, unique badging and interior details and a hands-free tailgate. The Iconic esprit Alpine represents the top spec, adding a premium nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a solarbay® panoramic roof that can transform from clear to opaque at the touch of a button and a 360-degree around view monitor.

Tax and running-costs are straightforward. At 97g/km, the full hybrid sits in the 25% BiK band for 2025/26; first-year VED is tied to its CO2 band (£350 for 91–100g/km), moving to the £195 standard rate from year two. Drivers reimbursed for fuel can lean on HMRC’s advisory fuel/EV rates as appropriate, while the Symbioz’s official economy figures will keep monthly fuel card spending looking saintly.
