Mercedes-AMG GT R 2017 verdict and spec
We try the 'beast of the Green Hell’ (aka the Mercedes-AMG GT R) for the first...
Should I buy one?
Arguably, the whole point of a supercar is to make you feel good and other people jealous. And few cars do that better than the Mercedes-AMG GT R; you’ll simply never tire of the noise it makes or that savage acceleration, and everyone you drive past will turn green (quite literally, if you choose this colour) with envy.
But the GT R is more than just a straight-line drag racer that relentlessly shouts "Look at me". It’s also really grippy, especially through fast, sweeping corners, helping to explain that astonishingly quick time around the Nürburgring. It’s even surprisingly easy to live with, once you’ve got used to the ridiculously long bonnet and the fiddly infotainment system.
For us, though, the cheaper McLaren 540C and Audi R8 are more agile and engaging choices. Both will prove faster down a typical tight and twisty British country lane and, more importantly, both will put a bigger grin on your face in the process. The GT R isn’t the best supercar in the world, then, but boy is it desirable.
