New Kia Rio vs Skoda Fabia
Kia wants to move from the small hatch fringe to being the main attraction with its new Rio. But first it has to usurp the current king, the Skoda Fabia...

Our verdict
In answer to our earlier question: yes, the Rio has made a quantum leap forward. This all-new model runs the Fabia close – really close. That cracking engine makes it nippy, and it’s genuinely roomy for four adults (five at a push), handsomely equipped and nicely finished. If only it were cheaper on finance and a bit more comfortable, it might have won. Once again, though, the Fabia’s package of affordability, decent practicality and fine driving manners keeps it at the top of the pile.
