Toyota and Lexus have recalled more than 3 million vehicles worldwide, 72,885 of which are in the UK. The Toyota Auris and Prius are affected, as well as the Lexus CT200h.
What is the problem?
There are two issues.
Parts of the fuel emissions control unit, which is mounted inside the fuel tank, could develop cracks.
Over time those cracks may expand, causing a fuel leak when the vehicle has a full tank.
The other problem is to do with the inflator mechanism in the driver and passenger airbag in the side roof rails. The airbag inflators could have a crack in a weld, causing it to separate when it operates. This means the airbag won't fully inflate and parts of the inflator could be ejected with the airbag.
What cars are affected?
Toyota Auris and Prius and Lexus CT200h models manufactured between April 2006 and August 2015 will be recalled to fix the emissions control unit. The Prius+ and Prius Plug-In Hybrid are also included in this recall, but Toyota indicated that only around 50 units of each would be affected.
Of the 72,885 UK cars, there are 34,135 Prius and CT200h models that also need the airbag fix. Those models were built between October 2008 and August 2012, and that includes some Prius Plug-Ins.
How can I check if I’m affected?
You can check if your vehicles is affected using a registration number look-up function online - toyota.co.uk and lexus.co.uk - or by contacting your Toyota and Lexus dealer.
How will it be fixed and how long will it take?
Toyota and Lexus will replace affected emissions control units with improved ones, with the work taking around two to three hours.
To fix the airbag, a retention bracket will be fitted to the affected air bag inflators.
How much will it cost?
Toyota and Lexus say the fixes will be made free of charge.
