Truth is, I don’t charge the Ford Mustang Mach-E out and about that much because I have a home charger that takes care of most of my needs.

What’s more, the summer weather has made a dramatic difference to how much electricity the Mach-E can take. In winter, when the air-con and heated seats were in regular use, the car indicated its range as 190-200 miles. On a hot day, though, it can show 265 miles – quite the difference.

However, when I do go further afield, I’m starting to learn not to just look for the nearest chargers but also for which firm operates them, and that’s a reflection of the variable standards of reliability and availability I’ve encountered,

In my experience Gridserve, Instavolt and Osprey offer the best experiences, as well as being there or thereabouts on pricing. Our own electric car charging survey backs my findings up, although I’m looking forward to using a charger from our winners, Tesla, now that they've opened some up for general use by drivers of cars from other brands.

It's a shame, though, that seeking the best chargers out can require a bit more work than just relying on the Mustang's sat nav-based charger locator.
