Buying and owning

Costs, equipment, reliability, safety

All our trio have prices of around £20,000 at three years old – keep in mind that's taking into account the trim and engine specs of our test cars. It's a similar story with depreciation because all have lost a similar amount of their value; the Juke's has fallen by £3895, the Puma's £3645 and the T-Roc's £3005.

Do any of them claw a specific advantage when it comes to fuel economy? Well, the Puma does. It averaged 42.0mpg during testing, while the T-Roc averaged 40.8mpg and the Juke averaged 37.8mpg. All three, meanwhile, attract the current flat rate fee of £155 for road tax, and that applies to all petrol cars registered after April 2017.

In terms of standard kit from new, you can expect climate control on all three, as well as DAB radio, Bluetooth and rear parking sensors. The Juke came the most well equipped excluding optional extras; it included a rear-view camera, keyless entry and metallic paint at no cost to its original owner – all optional extras with the Puma and T-Roc. The Juke rides on 19in wheels, the Puma on 18in ones, and the T-Roc on 17in ones.

All come with automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance, on top of which the Juke gets blindspot monitoring. All three scored five stars from Euro NCAP, but it’s the T-Roc that offers the best protection for adult and child occupants.

Although the current Juke was absent from our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, the T-Roc and Puma managed a 10th and 15th place finish respectively – that's out of 20 cars in the small SUV class. As brands, Volkswagen placed 20th out of 30 manufacturers, while Ford and Nissan placed joint 27th.
