Prior to the meeting the SMMT also outlined what it hoped to get from Mandelson, and it is clear that their wish-list was largely ignored.

These requirements were:

• Fast access to credit for vehicle manufacturers and the supply chain in the UK (supplied in part)

• Support for a European Investment Bank (EIB) loan package for the automotive industry (supplied)

• Allowing vehicle manufacturer finance companies access to special liquidity arrangements (not supplied)

• Increasing capital allowances for business and fleet buyers (not supplied)

• Review legislation regarding changes to business rates relief (not supplied)

• Scrap plans for increased VED and new first year rate (not supplied)
