Whats next?

Besides right-hand drive versions of the Roadster, Tesla will start production of an all-electric five-seater family car in late 2010.

Currently code-named Model S, the car is going to cost from around 60,000 and match the Roadsters range of more than 200 miles.

Performance isnt as electric (sorry), but it will still accelerate very quickly with a 0-60mph time of less than six seconds.

Model S is a complete ground-up effort by Tesla and doesnt share the chassis of the Roadster or any other car on the market today. It could, the company says, then be used for lots of other different types of cars including a 4x4.

Its ground-up design means that, unlike the Roadster, Model S owners will also be able to swap batteries on long journeys as well as, if a three-phase charging infrastructure is developed, top up in 45 minutes.
