The Toyota Corolla is a brilliant family car. It's comfortable, well made, well equipped and remarkably frugal in real-world driving. True, rear passenger space isn’t great, but as long as that flaw isn’t a dealbreaker for you, it's a fantastic buy. We recommend the 1.8-litre hybrid engine with Icon trim.

This range-topping trim is too pricey for us to recommend, although it adds part-leather seats and bigger (18in) alloys to everything that comes with cheaper Design trim.

The brawnier 193bhp 2.0-litre has you covered for overtaking, as is evident by the 7.5sec 0-62mph time. Even when your foot isn’t flat to the floor, its more powerful electric motor compared with the 1.8 makes it satisfyingly snappier to your demands in normal driving.
