For The Mazda MX-5 is light, nimble and great fun to drive. It's also relatively cheap to buy and economical to run.

Against You have to rev the 1.5-litre engine hard for it to give good performance. The boot is on the small side, too.

The Mazda MX-5 is a terrific two-seat roadster: it’s great to drive and won't cost much to buy or own. It’s thoroughly recommended.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

Like every version before it, the MX-5 is a bit of a bargain. Prices range from less than £19,000 to around £23,000, which means the MX-5 costs roughly the same as the Mini Roadster, but less than the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 coupe twins.

It's pretty well equipped for the money, too. Every version comes with LED headlights, air-con, alloy wheels, a USB socket, leather-trimmed steering wheel and four airbags, while higher-spec versions get heated leather seats, sat-nav, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen infotainment system.
