The 2012 Mercedes A-Class will be available from 18,945 when it goes on sale in the autumn, undercutting entry-level versions of the new Audi A3, BMW 1 Series 5dr and Volvo V40 by between 260 and 1125.

The all-new A-Class will be available in five trims and with the option of two styling packages. From launch, three petrol engines will be available, with outputs of between 121- and 208bhp. There'll be a choice of three diesel engines, with between 108- and 134bhp.

A 168bhp diesel version will join the range later, while an AMG version with a 300bhp+ petrol engine and four-wheel drive will arrive in spring 2013.

Standard equipment for all models includes Attention Assist (which monitors driver fatigue) and a radar-controlled collision-prevention system, while the options list includes adaptive headlights, blindspot assist, lane-keeping assist and speed-limit assist (with speed sign recognition).

2012 A-Class will be available with six engines at launch
